On Crete, discover how the Greek way of life is flavored by the island’s Venetian and Turkish past. Explore Rethymnon, including the nearby Palace of Knossos, where the myths describe as the home of King Minos and the Minotaur. Visit Heraklion, the island’s capital, and Chania, which has a lovely Old Town. Cruise to Santorini, actually a diminutive volcanic archipelago that many believe may be the site of the lost city of Atlantis! Visit the Akrotiri Museum, which is a showcase of the excavation of a Bronze Age village. Cruise to the caldera islet of Thirassia. Admire the baroque architecture of the town of Noto and marvel at the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina. Visit the remains of the Greek colony at Agrigento, described as “the most beautiful city built by mortal men” by the Greek poet Pindar. In Palermo, Sicily’s largest city, see stunning architecture and the mosaics of the cathedral in Monreale.
